Homemade Chocolate Shell Topping for Ice Cream

When I spied this recipe on the website of fellow Mom Central grant winner Jessica Nunemaker, I thought WOW!!! Homemade Magic Shell!! I wonder if it really works?!  See, I LOVE Magic Shell.  What I don’t love is how my kids eat ours and never leave me any.  Oh sure, they’ll stow the empty bottle back in the cabinet, so I THINK there’s magic shell to be had.  I get all excited, oooh BOY, I’m gonna have a sundae!!!  I scoop my ice cream and grab the bottle and squeeze.  But no magic, no shell – just a fake-out spit of spray that leaves me stewing.  Well, friends, NO MORE!  This recipe really works and it couldn’t be simpler.  Melt a half cup of chocolate chips with two tablespoons unsalted butter.  If you are patient (kudos to you) use the stove top; if you are truly hungry (like me) just put the chips & butter in a microwave safe bowl and nuke for a minute.  Stir until smooth and pour over ice cream.  No crazy additives or unpronounceable preservatives, just butter and chocolate and happiness.  Oh my.

Yields 4 servings.

SODIUM CONTENT: scant trace per serving

INGREDIENTS:

1/2 c. semisweet chocolate chips
2 T. unsalted butter

DIRECTIONS:

Melt chocolate chips and butter in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring until smooth. Drizzle over ice cream and top as desired. ENJOY!

  1. This looks SO good, Dishy!
If I’m really in a hurry am I allowed to just dump a combination of all the above ingredients directly into my mouth and then use my shirt sleeves as a make-shift napkin? Because it seems like that could happen at some point…
    :)

  2. Oh, boy, I sure remember that empty Magic Shell bottle. And the weird caramel-looking stuff that would come out of it at the end that you know was meant to be mixed into the chocolate along the way.

That looks amaaaaazing, and it’s awesome that it’s so easy. Who needs all that added sugar?!

  3. Good stuff! Thanks for the mention. I’m glad you liked it! Naked ice cream is just not fun. ;)

What a great and so simple recipe. Nothing like dark chocolate on ice cream.

Thanks to Jess, my ice cream will never go nude again! WOOT!

  6. is that all that magic shell is? wow, i never knew! it’s a bit scary, though, to think that it’s a paula deen-esque recipe with butter…lol. great shot, as usual.

Thanks Nat. You can make faux magic shell w/ butter – you could also use coconut oil. But as most people actually HAVE BUTTER at home – I thought this recipe best. Hah!
