The Everything Guide to the MIND Diet

Spicy Quick Noodles

FRIENDS!  I have some super exciting news to share.  I’ve signed on to co-author a new project, The Everything Guide to the MIND Diet.  My next cookbook!

The MIND diet stands for Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay.  It’s a healthy eating plan that stresses whole, unprocessed foods with an emphasis on:

  • dark, leafy greens
  • vegetables
  • fruits, especially berries
  • nuts
  • beans and legumes
  • whole grains
  • olive oil as the principal source of fat
  • a glass of red wine daily

So it’s pretty much the diet I’ve been following the past 4 years, with meat-eaters also enjoying fish and poultry a few times per week.  The MIND diet is a basically a low-sodium DASH diet, with limited red meat and dairy.  Like most healthy diets, you try to avoid a lot of fried, fatty foods and sweets.  But you can still enjoy them sometimes.

The MIND diet has shown an incredible rate of success in inhibiting Alzheimer’s.  One study showed that strict adherents of the diet lowered their risk of the disease by 54%.  HUGE!  Even better?  Researchers found that adults who followed the MIND diet even loosely, the “part timers,” still cut their risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease by about 35%.

In sum: this is very important work.  It’s also especially dear to my heart, as my dad has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.  His father, my grandad, died of it when I was just 17.  Writing this cookbook helps alleviate some of the pain of my father’s diagnosis.  It allows me to do something concrete to help him, as well as others.  I couldn’t be happier.

The Everything Guide to the MIND Diet will contain chapters on the MIND diet and its benefits, written by my former co-author on the Everything DASH Diet Cookbook, Dr. Murdoc Khaleghi, as well as – my contribution! – 200 delicious low-sodium recipes!

The recipes I’m creating are all similar to the ones on this website and my previous cookbooks, meaning they’re salt-free and low-sodium, with an emphasis on the healthy foods listed above.  I want these new recipes to help as many people as possible, to be as delicious as they are life-changing, so whether you’re trying to combat Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, hypertension, heart disease, kidney failure, Meniere’s or other hearing and vestibular disorders, the recipes will be just what the doctor ordered.  No pun intended.

Published by Adams Media, the same company I’ve worked for in the past, this is a project with a very short turn-around time.  Release is scheduled for this fall: OCTOBER 2016!

I’ll be hard at work creating recipes now through mid-April.  So please wish me luck, and send happy thoughts and prayers my way for great work.

Thanks and best wishes to you all, always.  Christy (Dishy)
