Informative article in today’s New York Times.  The city wants to establish guidelines for sodium content in food.  A&P supermarket is very involved, also the Subway chain.  Campbells soup opposed.  No surprise there.

Oh NUTS!

Yep. That’s what I said this morning, when I realized I am almost out of my favorite peanut butter. I’ve tried every no-salt-added brand out there — from Crazy Richards to Maranatha to Smuckers and BEYOND. But all of them, as delicious as they are, simply can’t match the one made by Price Chopper.

Price Chopper is a grocery chain located in the northeastern part of the US, and I’d never seen one until we visited Vermont. As you can imagine, summer in Vermont = hiking = lots of PB sandwiches. Price Chopper sells store-brand peanut butter like the rest of the big super market chains, but they are the first I’ve found to sell a NO SALT version.

THAT’S RIGHT>! We’re talking “normal” peanut butter - the very same consistency as Jif, Peter Pan or Skippy, but WITHOUT THE SALT.

You cannot possibly appreciate the magnitude of this discovery unless you are on a low sodium diet.

Until this point, I had been forced to consume jars of “natural style” salt free peanut butter - tasty, but no where near the PB I used to lap up before being diagnosed w/ Meniere’s. To me, natural peanut butter resembles newly-poured concrete beneath a layer of oil. The texture, taste, and consistency varying little between brands.

But this Price Chopper No Salt Peanut Butter… I nearly dropped over when I opened the jar. This is JUST LIKE THE PEANUT BUTTER I USED TO LOVE. Creamy - I mean, really truly creamy, with the oil mixed right in. Just look at this beautiful sandwich. (YES that is Garden City lavash, and if you have not yet tried it - what are you waiting for? It’s simply AMAZING - especially at 40 mg per wrap.)

Last time we were in Vermont (at Thanksgiving), I stocked up on 8 jars. Unfortunately, I’ve reached the end. I am putting a PLEA out to anyone reading this. Benson’s Salt Free Seasonings

When Debbie Benson contacted me several months ago, asking whether I’d be interested in taste-testing her salt free seasoning, I said OF COURSE! In the interim, however, my husband got a new job - moving us 400 miles north, and said seasoning got lost in the shuffle. I’ve been using salt-free blends since being diagnosed with Meniere’s. I’m familiar with Mrs. Dash, Bell’s, and others. All good. But none of them - even the best I’ve found, taste remotely salty. My doctor warned against using potassium-based salt substitutes, so I’ve avoided those. Besides, having tried them in the past - I know they taste terrible.

At first taste, you simply can’t believe this is a salt-free seasoning. And I mean, seriously - Table Tasty tastes like it has salt IN IT. I stuck my pinkie in, dipped and licked. Having trained myself to avoid salt at all costs, I must admit - I was shocked. I looked at the package and information brochure three times to establish that it was indeed SALT FREE. After regaining my composure, I called in my kids. We sprinkled it all over the popcorn. They looked at me skeptically. I tasted, they followed, and then, WOW. My two young daughters - one of whom eats NOTHING - she is so picky - wolfed the popcorn down by handfuls and begged for more. These are kids who can eat DORITOS!!! They know their snack food. And they were inhaling this seasoning like it was the best thing EVER. Because it is.
