Time is a thief. It not only plays with your memories, but often steals them outright. When you’re young, you think you’ll remember everything as vividly as it’s felt. The ache of loss, the soar of joy, these stain your brain likes eggs in a pickle jar. But as you age you realize that the pictures you grew up with & the people and places you once knew have faded like paper in the sun. The fear of forgetting is one reason I love photography and blogging so much. Both allow me to capture & document moments in time, preserving them for posterity.
Here we are in West Philly, February 2008. That’s me; in the kitchen making a mess, as usual. I can’t remember why my husband was taking photos, but I’m so glad he did. Look how tiny Georgia is! She was only 4 then. I look pretty much the same. From the back at least. Hah!
My husband and I got to talking last night about this website. The Daily Dish has changed a lot in the past 3 years and further changes are afoot with the arrival of the Mom Central grant. Back when I started doing The Daily Dish in late 2007, in addition to all of the recipes and photography, I also did all of the HTML coding.
Crazy, I know! I take the WordPress theme for granted now, but back in the olden days things were truly hands-on. I remarked to my husband that I was feeling sad.. I couldn’t even remember what The Daily Dish used to look like. That’s when he told me about archive.org, a non-profit digital library offering free universal access to books, movies & music, as well as 150 billion archived web pages… including MY OWN! Ta-DAH!
WOWZA!!! It was like seeing a long-lost friend after so many years and neither of us had aged a bit! In 2008, I upgraded The Daily Dish to a free WordPress theme, which thankfully archive.org captured too.
And here we are today.
The best thing about this post? Now that it’s been written, I have an easy reference after the NEXT upgrade. Love it!
